It All Starts With Standing

Let’s talk about the mounting block… I am a stickler for every horse waiting at the mounting block after you get on. I always say a good indicator is to wait for your horse to take a deep breath and make sure you ask them to move forward into the walk. I like to take it a step further with my own horses and horses in full training that I pick up the reins at the buckle very lightly and mount. I prefer not to take pressure to the mouth and have them stay immobile and relaxed with next to no rein contact, meaning they are standing still on their own accord. It sets the tone for a balanced and relaxed ride for both you and your horse knowing they are patient and waiting for your aids.
